ISA Medal 2009 to yhe neurobiologist Tomas Hökfelt

The Institute of Advanced Studies will award the ISA medal for Science 2009 to Tomas Hökfelt, professor of cell biology at the Karolinska Institutet of Stockholm.

On the proposal of several professors studying neurosciences at the University of Bologna, the Council of the Institute of Advanced Studies has fully endorsed the nomination of Prof. Tomas Hökfelt for the ISA Medal for Science 2009.

The ISA Medal for Science is the highest honour awarded by the Institute "in recognition of research contributions characterized by both excellence and influence".

Tomas Hökfelt's work contributed to the Copernican Revolution that took place in neuroscience field during the second half of the 20th century. His researches found the chemical neuroanatomy, a new integrated approach in the study of the nervous system.

The awarding will take place at 3.00pm in Aula Magna of the Biblioteca Universitaria di Bologna in the context of the meeting "The sick brain: new ideas for the health emergency of the new millennium". At 2.30pm, Prof. Tomas Hökfelt will deliver the lecture "From anatomy to chemical neuroanatomy: a new era for neurobiology".

The Ceremony is open to the public.

 

Tomas Hökfelt

is Professor in histology and cell biology at the Karolinska Institutet.
