Europeans often find it difficult to understand the altered political alignments in the US in the last 20 years. The research presents the thesis that America has experienced a revival of deeply held cultural values which drive both international and domestic policy decisions. Rapid economic and social changes have revived fundamental American values which contrast strikingly with the European experience. Among these are religious revivalism and moralism, sometimes called the "The Fourth Great Awakening," an anti-elitism manifested in deeply held suspicions of political, economic, cultural, and scientific elites, and sense of noble, and at times, almost Devine mission. Parallels to these can be found in European countries in the 19th century.
