“Why and How to Prevent Social Stereotyping and Prejudice in Youth: The Roles of Institutions, Parents, and Teachers"

Abstract of the lecture “Why and How to Prevent Social Stereotyping and Prejudice in Youth: The Roles of Institutions, Parents, and Teachers"

Most children endorse stereotypes about gender and race/ethnicity well before age 5. In additional, young children typically prefer same-gender and same-race/ethnicity peers by the time that they start school. Importantly, children’s attitudes about gender and race/ethnicity affect their cognitive, social, and emotional development, often in ways that serve to limit (rather than maximize) their potential.

In this talk, Prof. Bigler will summarize findings from psychological science concerning the causes of children’s social stereotyping and prejudice, with a special focus on environmental contributions to such biases. She reviews research on the prevention and minimization of gender and racial/ethnic biases, with the goal of providing concrete recommendations to parents and teachers for how best to address issues of gender and race/ethnicity with preschoolers, children, and adolescents in order to maximize positive developmental outcomes. The unique roles of parents’ language and behavior, and teachers’ classroom practices and structures (e.g., segregation by gender), will be addressed.
