Visiting Fellows in Social Sciences

Research field

Democratic studies with particular reference to the Asian continent.

Prof. Shin held two prestigious endowed chairs, the Korea Foundation and the Middlebush, at the University of Missouri. He founded the Korea Barometer and co-founded the Asian Barometer with Professors Yun-han Chu of Taiwan National University and Larry Diamond of Stanford University. The two Barometers introduced by Prof. Shin have become an invaluable instrument for the measurement of democracies in the Asian continent and are widely used by scholars and policy-makers.

Shin authored, co-authored, and co-edited a dozen books, noticeably contributing to the field of democratic studies, with particular reference to the Asian continent. His books include Mass Politics and Culture in Democratizing Korea (Cambridge, 2000), Confucianism and Democratization in East Asia (Cambridge, 2012) and the co-edited Citizens, Democracy, and Markets Around the Pacific Rim (Oxford, 2006), How East Asians View Democracy (Columbia, 2008), and East Asian Perspectives on Political Legitimacy (Cambridge, 2016). Shin has held visiting appointments in many countries (the Australian National University in Canberra, Central European University in Budapest, Charles University in Prague, Chuo University in Tokyo, the East-West Center in Honolulu, Fudan University in Shanghai, Nordic Institute of Asian Studies in Copenhagen, Seoul National University in Korea, the University of Cape Town in South Africa, the University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, Scotland, the Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin in Germany, the Woodrow Wilson Center in Washington, DC, and Yale University in New Haven).

In July 2017, Shin received the prestigious Maisel-Laponce Award from the International Political Science Association at its biennial conference held in Poznan, Poland.
