Clague, John

Visiting Fellows in Sciences

Research field

Surficial/terrain mapping, Quaternary stratigraphic investigations, engineering and environmental interpretations of surficial geological information and natural hazard studies.

Profile

Professor Clague, Professor Emeritus at Simon Fraser University, is a leading authority in Quaternary and environmental earth sciences and climate change. He has made major contributions in surficial/terrain mapping, Quaternary stratigraphic investigations, engineering and environmental interpretations of surficial geological information, and natural hazard studies, in particular he performed innovative research on the earthquake hazard in southwestern British Columbia.

He has received numerous awards for his research and outreach, including: the GSA EB Burwell, Jr. Memorial Award for distinguished contribution to engineering geology; the GAC J. Willis Ambrose Medal for sustained dedicated service to the Canadian earth science community; the GAC Logan Medal for outstanding contributions to earth science; the GAC E.R. Ward Neale Medal for exemplary contributions in earth science education in Canada; the Royal Society of Canada Bancroft Award for publication, instruction, and research in the earth sciences.

He was the Richard Jahns Distinguished Lecturer for the Association of Engineering Geology and Geological Society of America in 2007. He is the Past-President of the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia (APEGBC). He a former President of the Geological Society of Canada, a former President of the International Union for Quaternary Research, and a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. In 2013 and 2014, Clague served as Chair of a government-appointed Expert Review Panel on Landslide Hazard and Risk Assessment of the Cheekye River and Fan.

He and his students have conducted research in Canada, USA, Bolivia, Argentina, Chile, Austria, Italy, and New Zealand. His research on landslides was featured in a 2004 Discovery Channel documentary. Clague has published over 300 papers and books on a range of other earth science topics, prepared innovative geoscience products on landslides and other natural hazards, for educators and the public.
