Professor Karina Nielsen is Professor of Organisational Psychology and Director of the Institute of Work Psychology at the University of Sheffield. Prior to this, Karina Nielsen was Professor of Work and Organisational Psychology at the University of East Anglia, UK. Her research has been published in high impact journals such as The Leadership Quarterly, Human Relations and Work & Stress. She is experienced in using qualitative, quantitative and mixed methods designs. She is currently an Associate Editor of Work & Stress and Applied Psychology: An International Review, furthermore she serves on the editorial boards of The Leadership Quarterly, Human Relations, the Journal of Business and Psychology and the Occupational Health Science. She has extensive experience attracting funding for and leading large multi-disciplinary projects at the national, Nordic and EU level. Her research has been funded for more than 3 million euros by many institutions such as the National Work Environment Research Fund, Denmark, The Institution of Occupational Safety and Health, The Nordic Council of Ministers, The Nordic Research Council, and the European Commission. Her main areas of research are changes in the workplace of which an important strand of research is the implementation and evaluation of (training) interventions. She has expansive knowledge in developing and evaluating training interventions considering how learning obtained during training can be transferred to the workplace under contextual constraints. She has developed evaluation methods that may help researchers and organisations understand what works for whom in which circumstances. Another strand of Karina's research involves understanding how restructuring influences employee well-being. Specifically, she studies how restructuring can be implemented such that it achieves its objectives and at the same does not have detrimental effects on employees’ well-being. Finally, one of her latest project concerned an integrated framework for sustainable Return to Work in employees with common mental disorders sustainable return to work.
