Profile

Thomas Leslie, AIA, is the Pickard Chilton Professor in Architecture at Iowa State University, where he also directs the Graduate Programs in Architecture. His research examines the roles of engineering and construction in design throughout history, in particular early high rise construction (Chicago Skyscrapers, 1871-1934) and postwar building technology (Louis I. Kahn: Building Art, Building Science, and the forthcoming Beauty’s Rigor: Patterns of Production in the Work of Pier Luigi Nervi). Leslie’s work has been recognized with awards and funding from the American Academy in Rome, the American Philosophical Society, the American Institute of Architects, and the U.S. Green Building Council, and has been published in the Journal of the Society of Architectural Historians, Design Issues, Construction History, The Journal of Architecture, and Technology and Culture, among others. Prior to his appointment at Iowa State, he was an Associate with Foster + Partners, London and San Francisco.
